What do you need to know?
You can start improving your chances of getting a better job or of building a better career (or both) simply by being recognised for what you already know, and by committing to developing your skills over time.
You can do it through Qualification and Credit Frameworks (QCFs).
How do you demonstrate what you know?
The best way to improve your career prospects is to show that your skills meet the standards agreed by employers across the UK.
QCFs are designed to help you do just that. They represent standards accepted throughout the nation. are about the work you do. Finally, they are high quality qualifications that give you a certificate as proof that you have reached the required standard.
Each QCF is developed by people who really know your industry. They relate to the real world and many certificate holders will tell you that this is their main advantage.
Where can QCFs take you?
Whatever your job, it has a place in the QCF framework, which allows you to:
- compare different jobs on the same level, to see how you might be able to use your skills and knowledge in a different area of work; and
- see how you can move up the different QCF levels as your career develops.
The QCF is designed to help you make progress in your career. Working within the framework gives you a better chance of changing jobs or taking a career break without having to start from scratch each time.
When you move on you carry your skills and experience with you; by giving you formal recognition, QCFs help keep your career on the move.
Who are QCFs for?
Everyone can benefit from QCFs. There are 8 levels ranging from entry level covering basic work activities through to level 8 for senior management.
How do you get an QCF?
QCFs are flexible. There are no time limits, no age limits, no special entry requirements.
You can work towards QCFs in the way that suits you best. You choose where you do it - at work, at home, or in college. You decide how long it will take - working at your own speed, you can do it all at once or in stages.
QCFs are awarded dependent on your work skills. This includes being observed at work by an assessor who is experienced in your area of work and will talk to you about your work and set you practical assignments as well as giving you feedback.
If you can already do the work to the right standards, you may be able to get credit towards your QCF immediately. QCFs are a chance to use your past work and experience to advance your career.
You have the choice because QCFs are about your skills and your career.
Are employers backing QCFs?
QCFs give employers in all sectors of the economy a national benchmark for judging the contribution that you are likely to be able to make to their business. More and more employers are investing in the skill levels of their people. If you have an QCF, you have shown that you are prepared to invest your time in being recognised as a proven contributor to business success.
What about special cases?
Every QCF carries a commitment to equal opportunities. Age, sex, race, disability and learning difficulties are not barriers to achievement. All that matters is your ability to meet the QCF standards.
